EV Charger Infrastructure in India: Ready vs. In Progress

Operational (Ready-to-Use) EV Chargers

  • As of early 2025, there are approximately 26,367 public EV charging stations installed across India.    
  • Parliamentary data from August 2025 reports 29,277 EV charging stations nationally, with:
    • Karnataka leading (6,097)
    • Maharashtra (4,155)
    • Uttar Pradesh (2,326)  
  • On highways alone, 4,557 EV charging stations are operational, spanning major routes (146,342 km). Notably:
    • Uttar Pradesh: 507
    • Karnataka: 489
    • Maharashtra: 459
    • Tamil Nadu: 456
    • Rajasthan: 424  
  • Under the FAME-II scheme, of the 7,432 charging stations sanctioned at fuel retail outlets, 4,523 were installed, but only 251 are currently fully operational.  
  • Tier-2 cities now have around 4,625 operational charging stations.  

But, functionality isn’t universal—reports suggest that only 50–60% of the >25,000 public chargers are reliably functional, meaning many ready-to-install stations aren’t consistently usable. 


In Progress (Planned or Being Installed)

  • The PM E-DRIVE scheme (Oct 2024–Mar 2026) allocates approximately ₹2,000 crore to support the installation of 72,000 public charging stations.  
  • Under FAME-II, ₹800 crore was sanctioned for charging infrastructure, funding 7,432 EVPCS. Additional funding (₹73.5 crore + approvals for 400 more stations) is supporting further expansion.   
  • Approximately 50 wayside amenities (WSAs) along highways currently have charging facilities; up to 700 such locations are planned, with 458 awarded and 90 operational so far.  
  • In states:
    • Delhi: Aims for ~18,000 public and semi-public charging points.  
    • Kerala: Plans to install 3,000 chargers in public and private areas.  
    • Maharashtra: Has ~3,746 operational stations and targets 10% EV registrations by end-2025.  
  • Corporate players:
    • Tata Motors plans to scale up to 400,000 charging points by 2027, including 30,000 new public chargers and 500 ‘Mega Charger’ locations.  
    • Maruti Suzuki plans to install 1,500 chargers at its service centers and offer home install options, aiming for 5–10 km accessibility in top cities.  
    • Hyundai India: Expand from ~50 fast chargers (2024) to 600 by 2031; also provides access to 10,000 charging points via private operators.  
    • JSW MG Motor India has already deployed 1,559 chargers, in partnership with HPCL.  
    • Major oil marketing companies (IOC, BPCL, HPCL) collectively operate across 18,000+ locations, forming one of India’s largest charging networks.
